Research blog : Music Video Conventions

For this project I will be conducting a music video on the song Foolish by Ashanti released in 2002. In this music video I will be recreating a minute worth of footage to use with a minute worth of the audio from the song Foolish. I started this process off with researching R&B soul music videos watching and taking notes on certain background, props, movements and vibes created that were acted in these R&B soul videos. One thing I realized I had to do was watch more videos that scripted relationship scenes just like in the actual song foolish by ashanti. I already had pictures in my mind of myself and the actor finding ways to recreate a type of feelings of old school throwback vibes and looks. In order to get this type of look some senses will have to be more dimmed and props and costumes will look more old school and less advanced things we have in the year 2020. One way to help conduct the video look like that is to use props like a old school phone and have the actress dress more in a style that female singers would wears in the year 2002 in a music video with the genre R&B soul. During my research the type of videos I watched included things restaurants, beaches, and mansions but because I don't have those things i'm planning to shoot scenes with places available to me like a bedroom, pool, car and other places of the house. As i was doing my research there was a lot of music videos that every actress was unique in there own way and nun of the actress really ever looked alike so even though we have to dress and prepare my actress as someone else as in a younger old school version of herself I plan on not doing to much to her as in looks so she can be her own unique person.  Another thing I seen in 2002 music videos is the use of make up it wasn't as excessive as it is now a days it was very minimum which would just look like lipstick and some eye shadow. Most of the videos created also seemed to be shot outdoors there was plenty of videos I came across that were in neighborgoods, beaches, in stores, or even in schools. I know I don't have those options and equipments so using what I have around me I still feel as if I can make this video just as good as one produced in more alluring places. One thing I also realized I couldn't have in my videos that most R&B soul music videos did was a male actress to be the boyfriend or person they have a crush on but I figured because I don't have a male to use I could just have the actress be shown on the phone with  boyfriend. Other scenes can just be shown of the actress alone doing things that correspond to the song. The point of message of this video im trying to get across is a women dealing with a toxic relationship but allowing the person to stay because they have so much love for them showing its bringing out the worse in her just as the moral of the song is. During my research in music videos were the moral of the video and song is relationship problems they tend to be actual fighting or actually breaking things because i'm not going to actually break something one way I plan to do it is the actress just throwing things to show her anger. During my research another thing I tend to see is a lot of effect in the video like fire, smoke, lightings dimming in and out or flashes so I plan on trying to convert this type of editing into my music video as well. Music video usually are two to three minutes because mines has to be one minute exactly I plan on incorporating a lot of different scenes and looks so it doesn't seem so bland because I dont have alot of time to separate different feelings and scenes. As I watched some music videos I see there always is on or another whether its the actress lip syncing the lyrics to the camera or the actor is acting in situations to correspond to the words of the lyrics occurring. I choose to have my actress do a little of both maybe one or two clips lipsyncing and the most of the video I want the actress acting I choose to rather make the video more of acting video because I want there to be a message showing the distress and problems caused onto the actress.
